FAFSA Overview

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines eligibility for Federal Pell Grants and Federal Loans. It is available to U.S. citizens and some eligible non-citizens.

Who is a Contributor?
A contributor is anyone required to provide tax information for your FAFSA, such as a parent, stepparent, or spouse. FAFSA will help determine who qualifies.

FAFSA Changes & Timeline

  • The 2025-2026 FAFSA remains the same as the 2024-2025 version.
  • Expected launch: December 1, 2024.
  • To receive aid for Winter or Spring 2025, complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA.
  • The priority deadline for 2025-2026 FAFSA (for BYU-Idaho Need-Based Scholarships) is March 1, 2025.
  • BYU-Idaho will begin processing 2025-2026 FAFSA applications in March 2025.
Processing & Federal Aid Offers
  • After submitting your FAFSA, you will receive a confirmation email and a submission summary once processed.
  • BYU-Idaho will not process 2025-2026 FAFSA applications until at least March 2025.
  • Aid processing times:
    • 2024-2025 FAFSA: Processed within 5-7 days.
    • 2025-2026 FAFSA: Processing starts late March-early April 2025.

Common FAFSA Issues

If your FAFSA isn’t appearing in your Financial Aid Portal, check that:
  • Your Social Security Number and birthdate match on both FAFSA and BYU-Idaho records.
  • You have matriculated or declared a major (if not, your FAFSA cannot be linked).

To fix errors:

Verification Process

  • About one-thirds of students are randomly selected by the Department of Education for verification.
  • If selected, you must submit additional documentation through the financial aid portal.
  • Federal aid will not be disbursed until verification is complete.
