Each year the university provides students and employees with tax documents to report amounts paid and assist in calculating federal taxesThe following are tax documents you might need:

Student Tax Forms
  • 1098-T - Reports amounts paid of tuition and related expenses. For additional information and access instructions see, 1098-T Form
    • Physical copies should be mailed out by January 31 each year. You can access the online version of your 1098-T forms starting in February each year
    • Online international students who need a 1098-T will need to request it at Request an Unavailable 1098-T
    • For student having issues with their 1098-T Form, please ensure they fulfill all of the criteria in Unavailable 1098-T Request
    • NOTE: Current PathwayConnect students are not eligible for a 1098-T 
  • TL11A  (Canadian Tax Form) - Similar to the 1098-T, TL11A reports amounts paid for tuition and related expenses.To request this form, see TL11A Form. (Requests can take up to 2 weeks to process).

  • How long will it take to get my Unavailable 1098-T?
    • Unavailable 1098-Ts can take a couple of weeks to process during peak times, but during normal times it can take 3-4 days.
  • What do I do if I received my 1098-T form and it's incorrect?
    • ​​​​​​If your 1098-T form is incorrect, you can go into the Accounting Office and they will help you sort it out. 
  • Where do I find my W-2 form for taxes?

IRS 1098-T Form Description

  • The IRS Form 1098-T is an information form that colleges and universities are required to file with the Internal Revenue Service.
  • The IRS Form 1098-T reports amounts paid of qualified tuition and related expenses, as well as other related information.
  • There is no need to attach Form 1098-T to your tax return.
  • There is no IRS requirement that you must claim education credits. Claiming education tax benefits is a voluntary decision for those who may qualify.
  • Students from outside the United States should review the International Students section of this page for important information. Most international students do not need Form 1098-T for any purpose.
  • Every BYU-Idaho student who is a U.S. citizen and whose student account had financial transactions posted to it during the calendar year will have online access to their Form 1098-T or receive it in paper form in late January/early February.
