Deferments

A deferment allows you to temporarily pause an on-track semester without losing your admitted status. If you cannot attend your scheduled semester but plan to return later, you must submit a deferment request through the Deferment Options page to maintain your status. Several deferment types are available, so review your options before submitting a request.

To be eligible:

  • Submit your request at least one semester in advance.
  • Expect a response from Admissions within 3-5 business days.
  • The deadline to request a deferment follows the Academic Deadline for that semester.
  • Once approved, your assigned track remains the same, and you can register for future semesters.
Deferment Policies for Different Students
For campus students, a deferment is not needed for flex-track semesters or Summer Sessions. However, if you withdraw from an on-track semester and receive W grades, a deferment is required. If you complete any credits in an on-track semester, no deferment is needed.

Online students can take up to two consecutive semesters off without a deferment, but a third semester off requires a deferment request.

For non-matriculated and concurrent enrollment students, a Deferment Form is required. Concurrent Enrollment students must enroll in the next available semester or submit a deferment request to maintain their status.

International Students
International students must follow Immigration Requirements (F-1 or J-1 visa). Deferments are handled by International Services. To request one, log in to Sunapsis, submit the Annual Break Request e-form, and wait for confirmation via campus email. Contact International Services at (208) 496-1320 or international@byui.edu for help.

For Pathway students, deferments are handled by Pathway Support.

Managing and Canceling Deferments

If you need to cancel a deferment, contact Admissions at (208) 496-1300 or admissions@byui.edu
For a second deferment, submit a request through the Deferment Options page. If your first deferment was for missionary service, additional restrictions may apply. Contact Admissions for clarification at (208) 496-1411 or via chat on the BYU-Idaho website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my deferment showing for the wrong semester?
Deferments are processed based on your next on-track semester, not flex-track semesters. If you see an incorrect date, contact Admissions for assistance at (208) 496-1411 or admissions@byui.edu.

How will I know if my deferment is approved?
You’ll receive an email confirmation in your student email account within 1-2 days.

Will holds prevent me from deferring?
Yes. Certain holds, such as a Continuing Student Endorsement Hold or a Past Due Debt Hold, will prevent deferment processing. Resolve these holds before submitting a request.

Can I request more than one deferment?
Yes, but restrictions apply to specific deferment types (e.g., missionary deferments). Contact Admissions for assistance at (208) 496-1411 or admissions@byui.edu.
