Ecclesiastical Endorsement FAQ

What is an ecclesiastical endorsement? 

  • BYU-I requires every student attending to have an annual ecclesiastical endorsement, which will be completed by the bishop of the ward in which the student currently resides. 

Do I need an ecclesiastical endorsement if I am an online student? 

  • Yes, online students are required to receive an annual ecclesiastical endorsement. 

Do I need another ecclesiastical endorsement if I already had one for my BYU Provo (or BYU-I) application?

  • No, CES schools share endorsements.

Do I need an ecclesiastical endorsement if I am taking less than 12 credits? 

  • Yes, all BYU-I students should have current ecclesiastical endorsements. 

Why do I need a new ecclesiastical endorsement when I just got one? 

  • You need to renew your ecclesiastical endorsement during the first semester of your assigned track. 
  • Previous ecclesiastical endorsements for admissions purposes are only valid through the first semester of the assigned track. 

Do I need an ecclesiastical​​​​​​​ endorsement if I'm not a Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints? 

  • Yes, non-member students must be endorsed by the bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints ward boundary in which they currently reside. 

Do I need an ecclesiastical​​​​​​​ endorsement if I am only doing an internship? 

  • Yes, a continuing ecclesiastical endorsement is necessary for anyone representing the university through either coursework or other activities. 

I received an email about an ecclesiastical​​​​​​​ endorsement hold, what does that mean? 

  • It is time to renew your continuing ecclesiastical endorsement for your next semester. 
  • This hold only prevents you from registering for future classes. 

What do I do if I have to work on Sunday and can't attend church? 

  • You will need to visit with your bishop to discuss the situation. 

Do I have to be endorsed by my campus bishop or can my home bishop do it? 

  • Students who are on campus must receive their continuing ecclesiastical endorsement from their campus ward bishop. 

What if my bishop doesn't endorse me? 

  • You will not be able to register, however, you may appeal the decision to your stake president. 

If my campus bishop won't endorse me, can I get another bishop to do it? 

  • No, your campus bishop knows you well and that's why he should accept your ecclesiastical endorsement. 

I decided not to come back to BYU-I before I left school, but I changed my mind, what should I do? 

  • Contact your bishop and make arrangements with him to do your ecclesiastical endorsement as part of the reapplication process. 

Does my stake president need to do my ecclesiastical​​​​​​​ endorsement? 

  • A stake president isn't' involved in continuing ecclesiastical endorsements. 

Where can I get a copy of the ecclesiastical​​​​​​​ endorsement form? 

  • The ecclesiastical endorsement process is only completed online. 

I can't access the electronic ecclesiastical endorsement, what should I do? 

  • Is it time to renew your continuing ecclesiastical endorsement? Holds go on the first semester of your assigned track for campus students, and every spring semester for online students. 
  • Try changing your browser.
  • Try using this, https://web.byui.edu/endorsestudent 
  • If still unable, please call the Student Honor Office, at 208-496-9300

I can't find my ward, what should I do?

  • Go to the 'search' button.
  • Enter in your information, such as the name of your ward.
  • If you are from a ward that only has one name, you will still need to click on it in order to send it to the ward queue. 
  • You must click on the ward first, then click 'next' and proceed. 

How do I schedule an interview with my Branch President or Bishop?

Why can't my bishop see my name in his ward queue?

  • Make sure they are using the proper website, endorsement.churchofjesuschrist.org 
  • If he is still having trouble finding your request, then he can call the Honor Office at (208) 496-9300 (M-F 8am-4:30pm) to receive more help.
