In order to enhance security, Duo (BYU-Idaho's Two-factor authentication provider) is requiring users who wish to use Duo Push prompts with the Duo Mobile app to be on version 4.85.0.0 or newer. This will help overcome the security risks of older versions of the app. This change will be mandated starting on January 28th, 2026. Users with an outdated version of the app and no alternate authentication methods after this date will not have access to their BYU-Idaho account.
Checking App Version
To check which version of the Duo Mobile app you currently have installed, follow these steps:
1. Open the Duo Mobile app
2. In the upper left-hand corner, click the Menu button
3. The version number is located at the bottom of the sidebar and should be 4.85.0.0 or higher
| Version numbers after the first decimal continue to count upwards. For example, 4.104.0.1 is newer than 4.85.0.0 because 104 is higher than 85. |
Updating the App
For users on most devices, your operating system will automatically update the app to the newest version available. If you are on an older version of the app and would like to check for updates, follow these steps:
- Open your app store (Google Play for Android, or the App Store for Apple devices)
- Search for "Duo Mobile"
- Open the app page. If there is an update, there will be a button that says "Update"
NOTE: If your app version is older than 4.85.0.0, but you can't see an update button, it's likely your device does not support the newest versions of Duo Mobile, and you will need to enable an alternate authentication method.
Alternate Authentication Methods
Duo supports a couple of different authentication methods in addition to the Duo Mobile prompts. If you are unable to update your Duo Mobile app, you will need to update your account to allow for these alternate authentication methods. To update your account:
1. Sign in to a BYU-Idaho website, such as my.byui.edu, from a new browser or device
2. When the Duo Universal Prompt pops up, click "Other Options"

3. Select "Manage Devices"

4. Verify your identity with a Duo Mobile push notification
From the device management page, you can add a phone number to receive SMS passcodes and phone calls (recommended), or Windows Hello for supported Windows devices.
| EEmployees who work for IT, HR, or Finance will not have the option of receiving a phone call for authentication purposes, and will need to choose an alternate 2FA method. |
