Credit for Prior Learning
Credit for Prior Learning is an avenue by which a student may be awarded undergraduate credit based on licensing, certification, work, volunteering, or lived experiences outside the university curriculum. The program assists in the process for requesting academic credit through direct assessment of student learning (by exam), assessment of licenses or certifications, or through the portfolio method (demonstrating and documenting knowledge gained experientially and explaining how knowledge gained outside the classroom is related to college-level learning).
Eligibility: Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is awarded only for extracurricular (non-academic) prior learning in subject areas and curricula offered at BYU-Idaho with comparable course learning outcomes. CPL that is more than 10 years old will typically not be eligible. Exceptions may be granted by the respective department chair.
Students applying for CPL must be currently admitted and enrolled at BYU-Idaho as a degree-seeking student and must have completed at least one semester of coursework.
Application of Credits: Awarded CPL will be posted with a Pass (“P”) grade. CPL does not calculate into the BYU-Idaho cumulative GPA and does not count as resident credit.
Students may not earn both CPL credit and registered credit for the same course – whether completed before or after the CPL credit is awarded. If duplicated credit is found on a transcript, the CPL credit will be removed.
CPL may be used to meet the program requirements for an associate's or bachelor’s degree or a certificate. Note: BYU-Idaho certificates require a minimum of 40% (6 credits) of resident coursework.
