Foreign Language Exams

  • Offered for credit to returned missionaries in the language of their missions.

  • If the student lost their FLATS exam then they can and request another transcript here flats-sec@byu.edu. Here is the website with some additional FLATS information: Score Report

Exams Available

BYU Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (FLATS Test)

  • Allows student to get credit for foreign languages learned outside of classroom setting.
  • See 💻BYU FLATS Exam or 💻contact BYU.

Vertical Credit

  • Credits that count towards graduation requirements but not GPA.
  • See 💻BYU FLATS Exam. Refer to CLLadvising@byui.edu for more information. 
    • Native speakers are NOT eligible.
  • See, 💻 Printable Forms for the 📜 Vertical Credit Form.

Placement Information

  • Class placement based on proficiency.
  • If the class has a prerequisite, have the student contact the course instructor to be authorized for the class.

  • Arabic (not available at advanced levels).

  • CHIN 202 or CHIN 201.
  • RUSS 201 or RUSS 202.
  • FR 202 or FR 321.
  • IDS 290R (ASL).
  • LANG 321 for other languages not offered at BYU-Idaho
