Placement for Math, English, and Language Classes

Placement Exams

Placement exams help you to know which Math, English, or Language class to take in your first semester:

ACT/SAT scores can be used for placement into Math and English classes.

  • While students are not required to submit these test results for admission, they can be useful to satisfy prerequisites for some classes. For this reason, we encourage students to submit their ACT/SAT scores if they took either test.

Math placement exams: the ALEKS Placement Assessment exam and the BYU-I MathPath Survey

  • Can satisfy the Math 108X prerequisite requirement.

  • Takes 90 minutes to complete

English placement exam: the BYU-Idaho English Placement (or The Write Class) Exam

Foreign Language placement exam: the BYU Flats test

  • Returned missionaries (and others with extensive non-academic experience) should start at the 202 level (302 for Spanish) and may test out of 101, 102 and 201 if they need these courses. See Vertical Credit for details.
  • Native speakers are not eligible for these exams.
