FAQ

Adding Classes

How can I know when each semester will start?

  • You can find each semester's start date along with other important dates occurring during each semester on the Academic Deadlines page.

How and when do I register?

I have holds on my account and can't register for classes. How do I remove them?

  •  You can resolve holds in the Holds tab or the Student tab on your BYU-I account. You will need to resolve each hold individually and in some cases, this process requires two steps. Please refer to How to Resolve Holds for a step-by-step. You can also visit Resolve Holds for more information.

How do I get an exception to add a course?

What course prerequisites/requirements should I be aware of?

  • Make sure all prerequisites are taken before signing up for upper-level classes.
  • Check if any additional classes need to be taken with a course.
  • Other examples (e.g., majors only, juniors/seniors only, minimum cumulative GPA required, etc)

What is a block class?

  • Block classes are full semester courses taught in half the time giving students a chance to propel their graduation plans forward (there are a few number of courses offered with this option). A regular semester class is taught for 14 weeks, and block classes are taught for 7 weeks. These classes can be taken during the first block or the second block of the semester. For the exact start and end dates of block classes for each semester, please refer to Academic Deadlines

Am I able to take a block class at the same time as the in-person classes?

  • Yes, you can take a block class at the same time with full semester online or in-person classes.

I am taking a block class now, will I be able to register for another block class in the second block?  Where do I find a list of block classes for the second block?

  • You will be able to add another block class after the 1st day.  If you don't see the option to add, reach out to the teacher who you want to take the class from.

How do I add a second religion class?

  • After the first day of the semester all students can add a second religion course
  • If you need an exception to add sooner email: registration@byui.edu or call: (208)496-1411

How do I resolve an emergency contact hold?

Dropping Classes

How can I drop a class?

  • You can refer to Dropping / Withdrawing from a Class for a tutorial on how to drop a class. Depending on when you do that, there may be different penalties. You can find all of the important deadlines for dropping classes at Academic Deadlines. Please keep in mind that there is no tuition refund for classes that are dropped after the add/drop deadline.

When is the last day to drop classes?

How do I withdraw from a class?

Can I withdraw from all Winter Semester courses and return at a future date?

  • BYU-Idaho fully supports each student in making personal decisions that align with their individual needs and specific circumstances.

I accidentally dropped a class. What should I do?

  • If you accidentally drop a course, please fill out the Reinstate Course Request form. (NOTE: If you dropped the course more than 24 hours ago, then you will need to get approval to be reinstated from the instructor before filling out the form. This applies to both online and on-campus students.)
  • BYU-Pathway Online students will need to talk to a BYU-Pathway advisor to be reinstated into their courses.

I am a campus student who is on-track. If I drop all my courses will I need to request a deferment?

  • Yes. If you are on-track and you choose not to enroll, please request a deferment to retain your admission status.

I am a new student and BYU-Idaho this semester was supposed to be my first semester of enrollment; can I defer my start to next semester instead?

  • If you wish to postpone your enrollment to next semester, please email admissions@byui.edu.
  • You do not need to defer your assigned start if you take at least one course and are a US Citizen. The enrollment requirement is still satisfied even if you take less than a full-time course load (12 credits). However, taking fewer than 12 credits may impact your financial aid eligibility. For specific questions regarding your aid, contact the Financial Aid Office.

I am an international student; how will my student visa be impacted if I do not register for enough credits?

  • For information on requirements for International students who are attending on campus, please see Maintain my Status.
  • For any other question contact BYU-Idaho at 208-496-1911.

Is there a minimum credit requirement for the online degree program? I have signed up for one course this semester that is 2 credits.

  • The minimum credit requirement in order to be counted as attending for the semester is 0.5 credits for both campus and online students. If you have more questions feel free to contact BYU Pathway support

Why can't I register for online courses?

I am on a wait list for a course and it is the beginning of the semester. I cannot officially register for the class. What should I do?

  • For campus classes, you can speak to the professor. If a spot opens, you will be notified through your BYU_I email. The registration deadlines are available on the Registration Dates and Deadlines website, so you can wait to see if a spot opens for you by the deadline. If not, you can register for another class or section.

If I need to register for courses which are co-requisites, but one of them is already full, what do I do?

  • If a co-requisite course is full, you will have to remain on the waitlist. If you want to be added to the courses, you will need to talk to the professors of the courses so they can add you to the classes.

For now, try clicking on the add box for all co-requisites at the same time and then click the button at the bottom "Add Courses" or view How to Register for Classes. Please contact us if you have any further questions.

Is Freshman seminar a required class for all freshmen? I am not signed up for it, but I don't feel like I need to take it unless it's required?

  • The Freshman Seminar course is NOT required. However, it is one option to fulfill the College Success general education credit requirement. It is a great opportunity to learn how to have a successful experience at BYU-Idaho! If you want personalized help in knowing which classes to take, you can set up a meeting with an academic adviser by following the instructions on the Career and Academic Advising website.

What is an exception to register for a course?

  • Sometimes students have special situations where they need to add a course that is already full or may qualify to take a course without the need to take the listed prerequisites or requirements. In these cases, you may request an exception to add a course. You can find more information on what situations would qualify and how to make a request here.

Do waitlisted students really get into the classes that they are waitlisted for? How do you find out if you are approved to get into the class?

  • A lot of students are able to make it into classes they have waitlisted, but it all depends on the popularity of the teacher and class. Be sure to have another class/teacher in mind as a back-up.

  • Once you are able to add the class, you will receive an email to your BYU-Idaho email notifying you. You will then have 24 hours to add the class, or you will be removed from the waitlist and have to re-add yourself to it.

  • A professor might adjust the maximum number of students in their course if they under-anticipated the popularity of the class. However, if they do not adjust the number, you can still reach out to the professor to see if they would be willing to take extra students.

Troubleshooting

What if I am unable to see my course and assignment on my portal?

  • For Canvas issues, email your professor to make sure you are added to the course on their Canvas. If you already have been, contact IT at 208-496-9009 for assistance.
  • Note: online courses become available on Canvas the Saturday before the first day of the semester.

What if I am unable to see the courses when registering?

  • Please chat with us using the blue chat icon on the lower right of this screen or contact BYU-Idaho.

I can't access the classes for the courses I registered rather the ones I dropped are reflecting on my dashboard. What should I do?

  •  Please allow 24 hours for Canvas to reflect changes in which courses you are taking. If you are still not seeing your courses after 24 hours, please contact BYU-Idaho.

I have been trying to register for my chem classes this Winter semester. I have room to add things and, not seeing any problems in my grad plan, I go to add them. However, it  tells me that I don't meet the requirements and need to add a co chem class to continue. When I go to add the co chem class I need, there is nothing there to select that will allow me to add it. Does anyone know how to fix this situation?

  • You will need to meet with an Academic Advisor to go over your Grad Planner and identify the prerequisites needed to be completed before you can register for the Chemistry class.

I'm trying to request an exception to add a course through the Online Course Authorization Request but the course I need is not listed. What should I do?

  • Submit the form under a different course and provide us the course code in the comments. That way we are still able to process the request. If you have any questions, please let us know.
