The Microsoft Office 365 suite of software installed on BYU-Idaho computers includes many wonderful modules, but it does not include Microsoft Planner (Project) nor Microsoft Visio. These additional modules (Planner and Visio) require licenses that have an additional cost associated with them and must be requested by a department and must be paid by that department. Some of the licenses have a monthly cost per seat (user) and some are perpetual licenses with a one-time cost.
There are several flavors (variations or types) of licenses of Microsoft Planner (Project) and Microsoft Visio. This document will explain the different license options available for purchase through our Microsoft purchasing agreement.
LICENSE NAME DEFINITIONS:
***There are some key terms that you should understand before making a request for a Project or Visio license.***
Perpetual License: A perpetual license is a one-time purchase for software that is installed on a computer. This license can be installed and ran on a computer for the life of the computer. There are no additional fees, however, a perpetual license cannot be upgraded to newer (future) versions without additional costs.
Cloud License: A cloud license is a subscription service where the user has access to the software through a web browser. There is usually a lower cost associated with this type of license and the user will receive automatic updates and new features as they become available to the cloud services. This type of license is accessed through an Internet connection and web browser and is not installed on the computer for offline use.
+ Installed on Computer: Some of the cloud licenses offer an add-on that allows the user to install the full version of the software on their computer, thus allowing the user to launch the installed version when offline. However, the installed version is only valid while the cloud subscription is being paid. If the license expires the installed version will no longer function.
Standard Version: Some licenses are the standard version with the base level of features.
Professional (Pro) Version: Some of the licenses are the "professional" version which has a larger assortment of features and tools available than the standard versions.
