Turnitin is commercial, Internet-based plagiarism detection. It matches the text within an assignment by comparing a student's submissions against an archive of internet documents, internet data, previously submitted papers, and more. 

Purpose
Requester intended use of the product. What will the tool accomplish? What benefits to the university, students, others?

The primary purpose of using Turnitin is to provide students with an understanding of how to apply citation and referencing techniques in their work and provide online grading to academic staff.
