Many companies offer student discounts that require proof of enrollment.
Recommended Setup
- Create the account using your personal email address.
- Use your BYU-Idaho email only to verify that you are a student.
Example: Spotify Student
Good Example
- Spotify account: you@gmail.com
- Student verification: you@byui.edu
Result: When you graduate, your student discount may end, but your account, playlists, and listening history remain yours.
Bad Example
- Spotify account: you@byui.edu
Result: If you need to reset your password after losing access to your BYU-Idaho email, you may have difficulty recovering your account.
This same recommendation applies to services such as Amazon Prime Student, Adobe Student plans, and other educational discounts.
Students who graduate from BYU-Idaho have approximately three months after graduation before their BYU-Idaho email account is deleted.
This grace period gives you time to:
- Update personal accounts to a personal email address
- Change password recovery settings
- Download any information you want to keep
- Verify that important accounts no longer rely on your BYU-Idaho email address
Do not wait until the last minute. As graduation approaches, review any accounts that use your BYU-Idaho email and update them as needed.
Why This Matters
Once your BYU-Idaho email account is deleted, you may lose access to:
- Password reset emails
- Multi-factor authentication codes
- Account recovery options
- Important notifications from personal services
If personal accounts are tied to your BYU-Idaho email address, recovering those accounts may become difficult or impossible.
BYU-Idaho cannot restore or extend student email accounts solely to provide access to personal services or personal accounts.
Use your BYU-Idaho email for student information. Use your personal email for personal information.
If you expect to use an account after graduation, make your personal email address the primary email address and recovery email for that account.
Your BYU-Idaho email can verify that you're a student today. Your personal email should be the account you keep for years to come.
