How to Unsubscribe from Unwanted Emails
Unwanted newsletters, promotions, and automated emails can clutter your inbox. Use these options to reduce or stop emails you no longer want.
Recommended Method: Use Outlook Subscriptions
- Open Outlook on the web.
- Select the Settings gear.
- Go to Mail → Subscriptions.
- Find the sender you no longer want.
- Select Unsubscribe.
You may also see a menu option to block the sender. Outlook’s Subscriptions page only shows senders Outlook identifies as subscriptions.
Unsubscribe from a Single Email
- Open the email.
- Look near the top of the message for an Unsubscribe option.
- If you do not see one, scroll to the bottom of the email and look for an unsubscribe link.
- Follow the prompts.
Not every email includes an unsubscribe option. If the message looks suspicious, do not click links in it.
If Unsubscribing Does Not Work
If emails keep coming after you unsubscribe:
- Give the sender a few days to process the request.
- Make sure the email you are checking was received after you unsubscribed.
- Mark the message as Junk.
- Block the sender.
- Create an Outlook rule to move or delete future messages.
- Use Sweep in Outlook on the web to clean up messages from the sender.
If You Want to Keep the Emails but Reduce Clutter
Use Outlook tools to organize messages instead of unsubscribing:
- Move messages to folders.
- Create rules.
- Use Sweep for repeated emails.
- Use Focused Inbox to separate important messages from less important ones.
BYU-Idaho Email Guidance
If the unwanted email is from BYU-Idaho:
- Use the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message when available.
- If there is no unsubscribe option, identify the department that sent the message and contact that department.
- Former employees who have not taken classes should contact Human Resources at 208-496-1700.
- Alumni-related unsubscribe issues should be sent to BYU-Idaho Alumni with the person’s:
- Name
- Email address
- Phone number
Be Careful with Third-Party Tools
Some unsubscribe services require access to your mailbox. Use Outlook’s built-in tools first before connecting any third-party service.
Quick Reminder
Use this order:
- Outlook Subscriptions
- Unsubscribe link in the email
- Block, Junk, Rule, or Sweep
