As the end of the semester approaches, we want to ensure that our residents are prepared to successfully complete their end of semester checkout. The information covered in this video is vital to your success during checkouts. It is your responsibility to review and know this information.

Contract Dates 

  • When do Approved Housing Contracts End?
    • All contracts end on Thursday, December 17th at 6 p.m. All residents must be out of their apartment by this time. 
  • Can I stay past the Fall 2020 Semester contract end date (December 17th)?
    • Your contract ends on Thursday, December 17th at 6 pm. All residents must be completely vacated from their apartments by this time. If you have communicated with your building manager in advance, you may qualify for a rare exception to stay past December 17th. If this exception is made, you would still be responsible to pay the daily rate of a contract to extend your stay. 
  • I have a Winter 2021 contract? When can I move in? 
    • The contract date for Winter 2021 begins on Monday, January 4th at 7 am. Early move-ins will not be permitted unless permission has been granted for rare exceptions.
  • Do I need to reserve a Christmas Break Contract? 
    • All residents staying at Centre Square for the duration of the Christmas break must have a Christmas Break contract. Just reach out to your building manager to set this up. 
  • Can I pay a fee to check-in early to Centre Square for Winter 2021? 
    • No, early move-in exceptions are rare and to be approved by the building manager for the building you are checking in to. If this is approved, you would pay a standard daily rate for Christmas Break.

Fees/Charges 

  • When should I expect to see my security deposit returned to my account? 
    • If you receive any portion of a refund from your security deposit, it will be refunded back to your account within 30 days of the contract end date (December 17). 
  • What should I do with the command strips that I put up on my wall? 
    • You are responsible to carefully remove any and all command strips on the walls. If you peel or chip paint in the process, you will be charged a maintenance fee to repair the wall. 
  • I can't find my mail key, what should I do? 
    • If keys are not returned within the 30 days of the contract end date, you will be charged a $10 mail key replacement fee as stated in the contract. 

Checking Out 

  • I have a mail key, what am supposed to do with it? 
    • Mail keys can either be placed in an envelope provided at checkout and placed in the outgoing mail slot in your building, you can authorize a roommate to bring it to the desk during office hours, or you may drop it off in person at the desk. 
  • Can I leave my car at Centre Square during Christmas Break? 
    • The only residents who can have a car at Centre Square during Christmas break are residents with a Christmas break or Winter 2021 contract. 
      • If you have a Christmas break contract, you must park your car in the southeast corner of Centre Square next to the 30-minute parking by Building 3 off 1st West. 
      • If you have a Winter 2021 contract, you must park your vehicle in the same designated area above.
      • All Others-  Must remove your vehicle from the Centre Square parking lot or you will be subject to towing.
  • How can I be sure that all my stuff will be there when I return for Winter 2021? 
    • If you bag and label all of your items, then this will tell our staff that it is designated for you and that you will be returning for a future contract. If there are perishable items, be sure to throw them away if it will expire before your return. 
  • What should I use to label my items? 
    • Brightly coloured painters tape (click here for an example) is the suggested adhesive to label your items. Post-it notes, loose paper, and duct tape can easily fall off which make it impossible for us to identify if something is abandoned or if it is something you meant to leave behind. 
  • What should I label? 
    • The outside of cabinets, drawers, bagged food, and the bedroom door.
  • I am switching to a different bed in the same apartment. What should I do with my stuff? 
    • You can place all of your labelled items in the hall closet in your apartment. 
  • Will there be cleaning supplies provided during checkouts? 
    • It is the responsibility of the resident to ensure that they have the cleaning items that they need to perform their checkout. Centre Square will provide you with replacement vacuum bags and recycling bags if requested. 
  • Can I borrow a cart to transport and pack my car during checkouts? 
    • Unfortunately, we do not have any carts that we are able to handout. It is also important to remember that you must not remove any items from the apartment or use your desk chair to transport your items. 
  • Can I have overnight guests during checkout our check-in week? 
    • No, per the contract, no overnight guests are allowed to stay in apartments during these weeks (including parents). 

Final Clean Check 

  • Will I be able to have a re-check if I fail my final clean check? 
    • This should not be expected, but an exception may be permitted at the discretion of the employee conducting your checkout.
  • If I am leaving before checkouts, do I still have to do a checkout? 
    • Yes! We will need you to connect with your manager at least 72 hours before you leave or else you may be subject to a $35 cleaning charge. 
  • Where can I find my checkout assignment?
    • Each resident has a Centre Square employee assigned to assist them during checkouts. This employee will be reaching out to you with your scheduled time, and assignment no later than November 30. 
  • Can I switch cleaning job assignments with a roommate? 
    • No, you will not be able to switch assignments with a roommate. You will be responsible for the checkout assignment that you have been given. 
  • How much should I expect to be charged if I fail my final clean check? 
    • ​​​​​​​The standard failed clean check fee is $35. If you fail all or part of your checkout, this will be the standard charge. However, these charges may extend beyond $35 if there is abandoned property, damage, or willful negligence in cleaning. 
  • Should I wait for Property Services to pick up my trash before my final clean check? 
    • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​All trash must be removed from the apartment before your final clean check. It is not a reasonable excuse that trash pick-up has not come yet for you to pass.
  • What resources are available to me help me understand the expectation for cleaning at checkouts? 
    • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Residents may reference the cleaning descriptions attached below for full descriptions on how to clean in a way that would allow you to pass your final clean check. 

Storage

  • Can I store my items at Centre Square if I have cancelled a contract for a future semester? 
    • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​No, only residents with a returning contract can store items at Centre Square. 
  • If I am leaving for Christmas break but returning for Winter 2021 in a different apartment, how much can I store at Centre Square in student storage? 
    • You can store all of your things in Centre Square student storage if you have a returning Winter 2021 contract. If your next contract begins in Spring, you can only store up to 5 totes.
  • I am not returning to Centre Square, but I need a place to store my things. Can I use Student Storage at Centre Square until I can move to my new complex?  
    • No, only those with a returning contract may use this service. 
  • I have a friend that would like to store things at Centre Square. I would like to help them out. Can I do this? 
    • No, only Centre Square residents may store their items at Centre Square.
  • What things can I leave in student storage?
    • Residents with a returning contract can store a maximum of 5,18-gallon totes and a registered bike at Centre Square.
