Application Process & Deadlines

How to Apply
To apply as an international campus student, refer to the Application Steps on the Application Process website. This site also includes information on deadlines.

Arrival and I-20 Processing

Arrival Before Semester Starts
International students may enter the U.S. up to 30 days before the semester begins. Refer to part 5 on page one of your I-20 for details.

I-20 Processing Time
The time it takes to receive your I-20 document depends on when it was submitted and whether there are any issues. For an estimated completion date, contact International Services. You can find contact information and office hours on the International Services page.

Financial Requirements

Sponsors
International students are required to provide proof of financial support as part of the I-20 application. If your personal funds are insufficient, you must find a sponsor and provide documentation showing their financial support. A sponsor can be anyone, such as a friend, parent, or sibling, who is financially able to assist. If you arrive on campus without enough funds, you will be asked to return home and complete your degree online.

International Student Deposit
International students must pay a USD $4,000 deposit before the I-20 form can be created. The deposit is refundable if you choose not to attend. For more details, visit the Finances page regarding the deposit policy. For assistance with paying the deposit, contact International Services at (208) 496-1320 or international@byui.edu.

SEVIS I-901 Fee
Students must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee online at www.fmjfee.com. The fee is USD $350 for F-1 visa holders or USD $220 for J-1 visa holders. This payment must be made at least three days prior to your visa appointment or your arrival at the U.S. border (for Canadians). The SEVIS fee is required for the processing of your I-20 form and is a crucial part of the U.S. visa application process.

High School & Academic Requirements

High School Credit Certification
If you attended high school outside of the United States, you must have your academic documents evaluated by a third-party evaluator. BYU-Idaho accepts evaluations from either the International Education Research Foundation (IERF) or Span Tran. For more information, visit the Academic Evaluation page.

Employment & English Proficiency

On-Campus Employment
International students can find and apply for campus jobs through the Student Employment website.

English Proficiency Requirements
If English is not your first language, you must meet BYU-Idaho’s English Proficiency Requirements. Acceptable tests include TOEFL, IELTS (Academic Test only), or PTE. For more details on required scores and other proficiency requirements, visit the English Proficiency Requirements page.
