Basics

  • What is a deferment?
    • A deferment allows you to skip a semester you were expected to attend BYU-I without losing your admitted status.
  • How do I request a deferment?
  • When is the deadline to defer a semester?
  • How far in advance can a deferment be submitted?
    • If the semester is available on the deferment form, the Admissions Office will process the deferment once the ticket is received. 
  • How long does it take for the deferment request to be processed and how will I be notified?
    • You will be notified via e-mail with a deferment decision within 3-5 business days.
    • This process takes longer for international students because their request has to be processed by the International Services Synapses program first.
  • How many times can a student defer?
    • Deferments may be used as needed, there is no current limit.
  • When can I begin the deferment process?
    • One semester prior to the semester chosen.
  • How do I request a Military deferment?
  • Can I request more than one deferment?
    • Yes, deferments can be requested as needed. Please contact us for help.

Exceptions/Troubleshooting

  • Why is my deferment showing for the wrong semester?
    • Deferments start on your next on-track semester. You are not required to defer on flex semesters.
  • Why was my deferment removed? 
    • If you had a deferment but you're now enrolled in the BYUI 101 course, please contact us.
  • Will my holds prevent me from deferring?
    • A continuing student endorsement hold will prevent a deferment
    • A past due debt hold might prevent deferring, if so contact us
