When accessing Oracle P6 in the VDI for the first time, each student will need to first configure the database connection before they can connect to P6 Professional. The following steps show steps how to do this:
Setting up a New Database Configuration for the first time:
- Open the P6 Professional 21 application
1- Click on "Edit database configuration?" to open database configuration settings
2- Click on "Add"
3- Change the following default settings & enter a valid 'Connection String': Default Settings:
New Settings:
- Change to the following settings:
Driver Type = Microsoft SQL Server/SQL Server Express
Database Alias = (This can be whatever you would like to call it, in the example I chose 'P6')
Connection String = p6.byui.edu/PMDB
4- Click 'Next'
- Enter the public username and password to use for connecting to the P6 database:
- Username = "pubuser"
- Password = "pubuser"
5- Click on 'Test' & you should see a popup window saying "Test connection is successful"
6- Click 'OK' & 'Save'
- You will get a popup window saying "Alias is saved successfully"
Your new database alias created on the left & you can now close the Database Configuration window.
Logging into P6 Professional 21:
As of Fall Semester 2024, all students will need to log into P6 Professional using their BYU-Idaho username and password. Prior to Fall semester 2024, if a student had an account set up by their professor, their account needs to be converted to use SSO.

If a student is not able to connect to P6 Professional, try the following troubleshooting steps to check connection settings:
Connection Setting Troubleshooting:
If you have already setup a connection to the P6 database in a prior semester & are having trouble connecting, verify your settings:
- Open the P6 Professional 21 application
8- Click on "Edit database configuration?" to open database configuration settings
- Verify Driver Type, Database Alias, & Connection String settings & click 'Next' (Leave 'Use default database keystore' checked):
- Driver Type = "Microsoft SQL Server/SQL Server Express"
- Database Alias = "P6"
9- Connection String = "p6.byui.edu/PMDB"
- Enter the public username and password to use for connecting to the P6 database:
- Username = "pubuser"
- Password = "pubuser"
- Click on 'Test' & you should see get a popup saying "Test connection is successful"
Common Errors & Solutions
If you have verified that all of your connection settings are correct as shown in the above steps 3-7, and are getting any errors including the following errors shown below, please submit a ticket to the "Application Support (Tier3)" team and provide both the student's BYU-Idaho username and past P6 username if one was previously assigned by their professor in past semesters. Please also include screenshots of any error messages received.
- Invalid user name or password. Please try again.
- Bad public user name or password. ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
- Unable to connect to the database. Please run the Database Configuration tool or contact your administrator.
