Changing Your Name in I-Learn & Canvas
"Preferred" Name
Canvas will put whatever is in the preferred name section as your name, and then adds on your last name to that, often causing the double last name to appear. If you have your first and last name or middle name in the "Preferred" field, change it to just your first name.
1. Login to my.byui.edu and click your profile picture in the top right then "View Profile"
2. Click "Edit Personal Information"
3. Next to Preferred First Name click "EDIT"
4. Enter ONLY your First Name and click "Update"
5. Check Canvas again in the next business day, as it often takes a few hours for the field to refresh.
Request a Name Change
1. Login to my.byui.edu and click your profile picture in the top right then "View Profile"
2. Click "Edit Personal Information"
3. Click "Change" next to your name.
4. Select the reason for the name change
5. Input name changes
6. Upload a picture of your Social Security Card
7. Confirm the name change
8. Check Canvas again in the next business day, as it often takes a few hours for the field to refresh.
