For many years, users held the belief that Apple devices are less prone to viruses. And to a certain extent, this was somewhat true. However, the unfortunate reality is that Apple devices (Macbooks, iPhones, iPads) can get viruses just as easily as Windows computers; they just vary in type, name, or design. As Macs grow in popularity and usage, so will security threats. That being the case, it is up to you to take the steps necessary to protect your computer from intruders. One of the best ways to protect your Apple device is by utilizing reputable antivirus software, which is briefly covered in the Antivirus Software Tips article.
How can I keep my Mac safe?
- Give yourself the peace of mind that comes from a well-chosen, reputable antivirus tool (such as MalwareBytes). Do your own research, find what solution works for you, and keep that software up to date.
- Be wary in your Internet searches and download practices. Unless something is coming from a reputable source, do not download it. Most viruses can only infect your Mac if you allow it into your computer.
- If privacy is a concern of yours, consider purchasing a VPN service (Virtual Private Network). VPN services typically cost money, but when it comes to privacy and security "you get what you pay for." Free VPN's can at times come at a cost to you and your data. Premium providers have third-party testing with When it comes to technology, nothing is truly free.
- Do not use free public wifi services, like what you can get at hotels, restaurants, or stores. The information you use and share on the internet can be easily stolen over these unprotected Internet services. These are scenarios where VPN services really begin offering a valuable service.
- Educate yourself on what viruses are and how they might affect your Mac, but don't overwhelm yourself by trying to learn everything, because it would be difficult to learn about each one. Focus on how viruses may disguise themselves. Learn where they can be found. Once you know these things, viruses become much easier to avoid.
- Just like with a PC, be careful of what USB devices you plug into your computer. USB drives can carry around viruses.
- Above all, do your research and invest the time and money (at times it does) that is required to be wise, informed consumer of Apple products. PC owners have to do the same for their devices.
